Read this verse carefully. It points to the Atomic Theory precisely. In chemistry and physics, atomic theory speaks of the nature of matter, which states that matter is composed of discrete units called atoms, or as Paul says "things which are seen (matter) is made up of things which were invisible (atoms). Depending on the atom, the smallest atom, Hydrogen is said to make up approximately 90% of the universe. It's through these small atoms and their complex bonding behavior that we make up visible matter. Ironically, to this day we can't actually "see" atoms with the naked eye. Atoms are much smaller than the wavelength of visible light but we can detect them through spectroscopy, which shows their presence, bonds, and structure.
"For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountain of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries."
