The Tower of Babel: some feel Genesis should be taken metaphorically rather than literally. I believe in my heart the Bible should be taken at face value. If the Bible speaks of a parable, it makes it obvious that it's a parable. With the Tower of Babel, it is exactly what the Bible said it was.
Scientifically, let's review the evidence:
In those days, they would have used sun baked bricks made of clay. Upon calculating one brick's weight and it's breaking point, scientists showed the breaking point was 800 pounds was the maximum load and vertically it's over 2 square inches. The bricks were manufactured in the same manner as would have been made in ancient days. Putting these together to see the maximum heights hat these bricks could sustain and it's calculate to 1, 500 feet or approximately the height of the Chrysler building in New York. But don't forget to read on: Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. (Genesis 11:3 NKJV). When those bricks were baked at 1500 F for 24 hours, those new bricks could sustain a maximum load of 6,000 pounds. The new maximum height? 3,500 feet and if the tower was made in a pyramidal shape to distribute the load, it could be a tall as 10,500 feet.
That's over 2 miles high and 4 times taller than modern day's tallest building. This Tower of Babel could very well "reach the Heavens"...or at least high enough that the individuals climbing it would feel altitude sickness. Isn't science so amazing when it backs up God's word? God bless you all!
